But then I showed it to my professor, and that’s when reality hit—I realized how many flaws were in it. Most of them were things I wouldn’t have noticed until I actually started living in the house.

That’s when I learned how much more professional architects, designers, and contractors know about floor plans. But for someone without that expertise, most floor plans just look good on paper, even if they’d be challenging to live in.

I noticed this gap even more when I started my own architecture practice. What I realized is that most of design issues could have been solved if they just had a basic understanding of design principles.
